Install Snipfire

Check the requirements first: WordPress 6.5 or newer and PHP 8.1 or newer.

Install the free plugin

  1. Download the zip from snipfirewp.com/download.
  2. In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin, choose the zip and click Install Now, then Activate.
  3. You'll find Snipfire in the admin menu, with Snippets (the editor), Snippet library, Header & Footer and Tools & Safe Mode. On a new site, the editor opens on Getting started.

Snipfire isn't in the WordPress.org plugin directory, which no longer accepts plugins that run code you write. Its sister plugin Snipfire Tweaks is there: 71 of the library's ready-made snippets as on/off switches, with no code editor. See also snipfirewp.com/tweaks.

Open Snipfire → Tools & Safe Mode and copy the link under Safe mode. Save it in your password manager or bookmarks. If a snippet ever locks you out of your site, that link gets you back in. More about safe mode.

Add Snipfire Pro

Snipfire Pro is an add-on: keep the free plugin installed and active, and install Pro next to it.

  1. After you buy (or start a free trial), download the Snipfire Pro zip from the link in your purchase email, or later from your Freemius account at users.freemius.com (Downloads).
  2. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the zip and click Install Now, then Activate.
  3. Activate your licence (below).

Snipfire Pro needs Snipfire. If the free plugin isn't active, WordPress asks you to install it first. Snipfire Pro 0.17 needs Snipfire 0.17.0 or later.

On a multisite network, network-activate both if you'll use network snippets.

The Pro zip unzips to a folder named snipfire-pro-premium. That's expected.

Activate your licence

After you activate Snipfire Pro, WordPress shows a notice: Snipfire Pro needs an active licence for its features. Click Activate your licence, paste the licence key from your purchase email, and confirm.

Until the licence is active, your snippets keep running normally, and any settings that need Pro stay safely off. Licence details.

Updates

Snipfire and Snipfire Pro update from Dashboard → Updates and the Plugins screen, like other plugins, and automatic updates work. Every update of the free plugin (from 0.17.0 on) is signed, and checked before it's installed; Snipfire Pro's updates come from Freemius. A site on Snipfire 0.15 or earlier needs one update by hand first. See Updating Snipfire.
